Graduate Student and Early Career Research Colloquium: Established Adulthood in Urban India: Lived Experiences and Cultural Representations - Jayana Padalia, Faculty of Family and Community Sciences, the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, India
Jayana is a second year doctoral student in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies, Faculty of Family and Community Sciences, The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, India. This presentation draws from Jayana’s ongoing doctoral research, which examines established adulthood (ages 30–45) in the Indian context. The study integrates culturally resonant concepts such as Grihasthashrama—the householder stage in the Dharmashastras—which emphasizes family, social responsibilities, spiritual growth, and dharma - with contemporary cultural materials, particularly Indian cinema, to explore how social, cultural, and economic factors shape the lived experiences of adults in this stage. Initial findings will form the basis of the presentation, along with a discussion of the broader research design, which includes in-depth interviews, thematic analysis, content analysis, and focus group discussions.
